BOOK REVIEW

Sea of Ruin by Pam Godwin was a fantastic take on a historical romance surrounding piracy. The book was totally unforgettable considering all the drama and action and steam (I rather mean wetness haha). It was not like any novel in the genre I’ve ever read before. The romance aspect was unexpectedly good, especially given the fact that there was a freaking love triangle which I’m usually not a fan of (SPOILER! Especially, since the aforementioned triangle stayed intact in the end). I think it was because of the author’s mesmerizing writing style and the ability to grab the readers by their throats and shove them into the darkest depths of sinful love and gut-wrenching ruin.

There was only so much suffering a person could endure before they broke. Sometimes, broken things couldn’t be put back together.

Bennett Sharp was one of the most fierce lady pirates I’ve ever come across with. She was a force to be reckoned with considering all the hardships she had to go through. She was such a great female character with both angelic and devilish sides. And although I found some of her decisions and actions extremely rushed and stupid, her wittiness and dreaminess made it up for her rarely shown shortcomings.

“You promised him I would be a man of his fortitude and spirit. A man who loves you above all else. Only you. And we shall be blinded by our love for life and beyond the ends of the sea.”

There’s too much to say about the love interests, Priest Farrell and Ashley Cutler. They were immaculate, to say the least. That’s about it of what I decided to reveal since I really want you to see for yourself all the complexity and intensity of the two. Add Bennett to the explosive mix and you’ll get the greatest experience of witnessing the three of them facing their biggest battle of feelings and wills...

Pam Godwin slapped the dark romance genre on its beautiful ass with Sea of Ruin. It was very dark indeed with lots of trigger warnings, and extremely angsty. The world-building was incredible. The cast of characters was diverse and well-developed. The dialogues were carefully crafted and simply meaningful. Long story short, the book definitely shouldn’t be missed!

PS. My only regret is that I didn’t read the book when it was first released and thus, unwillingly fell prey to spoilers in someone else’s review. I’m also sorry for spoiling you. But if you have somebody interested in Sea of Ruin, tell him or her to dive into the book completely blind, and with a completely open mind.

“The three of us together cannot be stopped.” A savage glint lit in Priest’s eyes. “We’re an exquisite force of destruction.”

I couldn’t agree more.

Love prevailed, not in the windless calm of life, but in the ruin.
